Hidden Gem | Breakfast Tacos

Normally we stay with local establishments but this is something close to Albuquerque’s North Campus area that we need to discuss. Yes, most everyone is familiar with Rudy’s BBQ (2321 Carlisle NE, 505-884-4000, open 7 days a week 7 am-10 pm). It’s sign is hard to miss traveling on I 40 or Carlisle. And with the limited barbecue options in town, it fills a  void in the Duke City. But did you know Rudy’s BBQ is open for breakfast and it’s kind of…awesome!

The one and only item they serve is breakfast tacos. New Mexico has the breakfast burrito on lock. But if you’ve spent any time in Texas you know they claim the breakfast taco. And this San Antonio-started restaurant has brought this Texas favorite across the border to us and included the New Mexico must-haves. In the Albuquerque breakfast environment there is definitely room for both the burrito and the taco (hint: they’re basically the same thing).

If you are in a rush they have pre made tacos at the door for an easy grab-n-go. With that said, it’s worth visiting the counter to customize your own. On today’s trip we went with egg, brisket(!), cheese, potatoes, and green chile. We then slathered it with their very good barbecue sauce. The traditional New Mexican burrito fillings are awesome, especially carne adovada, but have you ever tried a breakfast burrito or taco with smoked brisket? Amazing.

There are plenty of options to customize yours like bacon, sausage, beans, and carne adovada, in addition to what we put in our tasty taco (see full menu). The base price includes 2 items. The 4-item taco we made only cost $2.89. Give it a try sometime, you’ll enjoy.
